Great teams review their performances. A recent publication from George Washington University used video of cardiac arrest resuscitations to generate educational interventions to minimize pulse checks during resuscitation. During the study period, the emergency department reviewed video of 70 cardiac arrests with 325 pulse checks at education rounds. From there they developed targeted educational interventions. Having the code leader limit the pulse check durations, increase a focus on compressions, and record ultrasound images before interpreting them (rather than reviewing in real-time) reduced mean pulse check duration from 17.2 seconds to 10 seconds - a statistically and clinically significant improvement.
