Anticholinergic Agents:


Mechanism of Action:

  • Competitively antagonizes acetylcholine at the postganglionic junction between the parasympathetic nerve terminal and effector cell
  • Blocks vagal-mediated bronchoconstriction of larger airways


Side Effects: Dry mouth, thirst, difficulty swallowing, tachycardia, restlessness, irritability, urinary retention, blurry vision, increased intraocular pressure

Aerosolized delivery via MDI or nebulizer
Has a synergistic effect when combined with short-acting beta agonists
